Within the brief we had to research many different music magazines allowing us to view the conventions that are included in a magazine layout. In order to carry out this specification to a high standard I had to make sure I included things that already appear in a magazine from the music market. These consist of being a Masthead, Cover lines, Cover star, images (that are appropriate for the age group that I’ve selected), and a house theme etc. Therefore I ensured that these were all included in my magazine to portray the conventions of a current music magazine.

My magazine represents the social group that I have aimed to meet and attract, which are teenagers, you can see this through it being a young style, bright and colourful, attracting the correct audience that I’ve aimed for and also involving popular artists and interesting information to keep the audience interested and attentive in my music magazine. Also using familiar artists within my magazine will ensure that the audience will be interested in reading more about them and that they will stay reading the magazine till the end.

When designing my magazine I took into account the age range that I was aiming for, this would decided the wording that I included into the magazine as my age group was 13-17 I had to use words that were able to be read by a 13 year old but not to small and childlike that 17 year olds would be bored of. Therefore I used some big words but kept them simple to read and understand therefore making the best for all ages. My magazine is based around pop as I discovered that the current market was without a pop magazine, this would now be filled by my magazine. My magazine has been seen by five people who have given me good comments towards it, this has told me that the layout, colour scheme and information I have included is of value and that the audience do like the look of the magazine. The title attracts the audience by being big enough to be eye catching as well as the yellow on the blue background. The cover star grabs the attention of the reader as it is in your face but in a good way, it shows a balance of being in your face but not to in your face that it is annoying and hard to look at it. The image shows the reader who the magazine is about and gives a friendly feel to it from the way that Sarah has been presented. I have chosen the colours and used them throughout the whole of the magazine to create a continuous pattern throughout. The colours compliment each other and work well together showing off the magazine to the public eye.

The institution that I would distribute the magazine is the likes of E-Map as they distribute magazines such as Mojo and Heat, as well as over big names and popular magazines with the general public. Hopefully this would expand the popularity and audience towards my magazine, making it a successful product.

As I’ve said previously the magazine would be aimed to teenagers mainly to the ages of 13 – 17 years old as they seem to be left out of the equation of music magazines. Nowadays not many teenage magazines are out already you have the obvious Kerrang! and NME magazines that are distributed to a slim few of the rock genre leaving pop/dance/r&b etc out of the music market.

It was quite easy to attract my audience as I was giving them something new and something that hasn’t already been done before. Giving them something new gave me a chance to push something that I believe could go far in the music business of magazines. More people seemed to be interested in my magazine from knowing it was going to be a pop magazine as they hadn’t been able to get anything similar to this before making attracting the audience simple. Also I had to address the audience through giving them something new and also at a fair rate of price, making the price too high would cause sales to drop but putting it too low would be like giving the magazine away, creating a correct balance between the two would help a lot when it came down to the price.

The things that I’ve learned throughout this coursework in terms of techniques and technologies is that there are many softwares of which Photoshop that I haven’t heard of and are actually very good and easy to use, once you’ve grasped the basics. Photoshop is a brilliant way of beinging your ideas to life, creating something so unique and unusual that no one else has ever thought of before. It’s a great way to show your ideas and present them in an creative style to the audience that you are aiming to impress and attract.

Looking back at the beginning of the coursework when I was first given the assignment of making a magazine, I wasn’t able to use the software provided to us: Photoshop, therefore my preliminary task seem to be pretty basic. As time passed I knew I had to spend more time playing around on photoshop otherwise the preliminary task I was doing to use as my final one wouldn’t have been that presentable and good. After a while I realised how to use photoshop and my preliminary task seem to improve slightly each time, once I was happy I moved onto the research and planning and when it came to the construction side of the main task I knew how to work photoshop so I had the advantage of not having to waste anytime in trying to learn how it works. From the first draft of a magazine to my final product now I can see a big improvement as I have more information on the final product and as someone said in the final product questionnaire, “it looks like a real magazine”.

The things that I have learned by doing this coursework are how to use the photoshop software, which is good as I would still be unaware of this useful software. Also I have discovered that the more time you spend doing a particular task, eg. Working out photoshop, you can come up with something really good that might even surprise yourself.

Overall I believe that the magazine I have made is good as it has the information that people will be interested in reading and also it being a pop magazine will encourage people who like this style of music to purchase a music magazine. Therefore I believe I have made progress throughout this task and believe that my magazine will be something the age range I chose will want to read.

  1. Amanda you have discussed around the ideas that the compulsory evaluation questions focus on but I would like you to edit your evaluation slightl so it is clear that you have answered the following questions in turn;

    In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

    How does your media product represent particular social groups?

    What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

    Who would be the audience for your media product?

    How did you attract/address your audience?

    What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

    Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

    I will wait ntil you have done this before I give you a final evluation grade please do it ASAP I have to submit a final grade in the next two days.
